Inauguration of the second tube of the Frejus Tunnel

On 28 July, the second tube of the Frejus Tunnel was inaugurated, the new infrastructure that strengthens the road connection between Italy and France. The ceremony was attended by the Italian Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, and the French Minister of Transport, Philippe Tabarot, testifying to the strategic value of a work that represents a key node of European mobility.

The new tunnel, 12.9 km long and 8 m in diameter, runs parallel to the first one already in operation, allowing traffic flows to be separated and guaranteeing the highest safety standards. In fact, the Frejus Tunnel now has 34 pedestrian shelters, 9 driveway bypasses for emergency vehicles, advanced ventilation and fire protection systems.

The construction of the second tube is a project realised and managed by the GEF – Groupement d’Exploitation du Fréjus, formed by the concessionaires involved in the Tunnel from the two countries: SITAF, Società Italiana Traforo Autostradale del Frejus and SFTRF Société Française du Tunnel Routier du Fréjus. The new infrastructure thus celebrates international collaboration and the engineering success of the joint expertise of Italy and France.
