T4 Section
Exceptional transports in the context of these regulations are considered to be vehicles or vehicle combinations that exceed at least one of the following dimensions: height 4 m; width 2.55 m or 2.60 m for refrigerated vehicles; length 18.75 m. The following are also considered exceptional transports: vehicles with maximum speed below the minimum authorised speed (50km/h), a tractor unit towing another tractor, vehicles towed by professionals authorised by the Concessionaire. Classification Vehicles classified as exceptional transports are divided into three categories:
- Category A: – vehicles with width greater than 2.55 m (2.60 m for refrigerated vehicles) and less than 2.80 m or length greater than 18.75 m and less than 25 m or height greater than 4 m and less than 4.3 m.
- Category B: – vehicles with width over 2.80 m and less than 3.50 m or slow moving or towed vehicles.
- Category C: – vehicles with width over 3.50 m and less than 6.00 m or vehicles with length over 25 m.
Traffic conditions Category A convoys are authorised in the tunnel without any special requirements.
The Operational Management Offices reserve the right to impose the date and time of transit of exceptional transports for categories B and C. For the latter two categories, the dimensions of the vehicles must be checked by operating staff before the Regulator gives authorisation for transit. The dimensions will be reported by the Regulator in the digital register.
For category B vehicles, the Regulator will ensure that the lane to be travelled in is clear before authorising transit. The transit of category C vehicles, given the necessity to use two lanes, will take place with the Tunnel closed to traffic in both directions. Once the dimensions of the convoy have been verified, the Regulator will prohibit access to the Tunnel for all vehicles before authorising departure.
The accompaniment of the exceptional convoy of categories B and C will be carried out in the same manner as for convoys of dangerous goods, as indicated in Art. 9 below. Category B vehicles may also be part of an accompanying convoy of vehicles carrying dangerous goods, with the convoy limited to a maximum of 7 vehicles.
